What are some good ways to stand out during an internship?
Some
effective ways to stand out during your internship are by being a good
listener, being pro-active, and trying to think about the big picture.
By being a good listener you are observing your environment, the
culture, the who’s who in staff, affiliates, clients, etc. and you are
absorbing everything you can as it will serve you during your
internship. Keep your questions to a bare minimum as you will notice
that by listening many of your questions will inevitably be answered.
By being pro-active you will notice tasks that need to get done and you
can offer to do them without being asked. Offer to assist with picking
up the mail, faxes, ordering office supplies, answer phones, take
messages, sit in meetings and take notes. The latter is actually a perk
that will help you learn more about the company and it’s mission or mode
of operandi. Your supervisor will quickly appreciate your presence and
the time you are freeing up for him or her to do higher level projects
such as sales calls, develop marketing ideas, or whatever area he or she
is involved in. Make certain that you visit the company’s website and
get an idea on how the company is perceived in the outside world. Is
there any room for improvement? Is the company developing their presence
in the Social Media world? Whatever you discover, you may develop some
ideas to present to your supervisor and offer to help in any way that
your supervisor finds suitable. Most supervisors will appreciate you for
this. |
